If you are a sports fan, football fanatic or perhaps someone who enjoys inspirational stories about ordinary people, then you would appreciate the Netflix documentary series “Last Chance U.”

The documentary follows the young men of East Mississippi Community College’s football team who are training in the middle of nowhere in an effort to make it somewhere.

EMCC is located in Scooba, Mississippi, with a population of 697 and an out of place football stadium was erected in the middle of town. With all the bells and whistles, it stands as one of the nicest facilities among junior colleges in the nation.

The series dives into the lives of individual players on the team who come from different backgrounds. But for most of them, they came to Scooba for one reason, to get out.

Many of the players came from Division-I teams, but did something to set them back. Now enrolled at EMCC, head coach Buddy Stephens and his coaching staff works to develop the players into extremely talented athletes and scholars.

This season, we have a local who will join the EMCC Lions, Wyatt Davis, a former Pearl River Central quarterback. No, Davis did not get into trouble and seek EMCC as his last chance. It’s quite the opposite for him. After the team showed interest, he chose EMCC as his first option, which I believe to be a great move by the upcoming quarterback. Is he talented? Absolutely. And now he gets to train against some of the best talents in Junior College on a daily basis and learn from a coach who also graduated from EMCC and became the starting quarterback at Ole Miss. It’s always difficult to leave a place you are familiar with, like Pearl River County, and he is taking a big risk. Big risks come with big rewards and I hope he reaps those rewards.
