Opportunities abound to support our city

Supporting the community you live in has always been something I’ve taken great pride in, and after spending a year here, it is evident that I am not the only one.
Starting Wednesday, we have the opportunity to show the rest of the nation how great Picayune and Pearl River County truly is.
Players and family members from New Mexico to Alabama and even all the way up to Oklahoma will be coming to Picayune this week to participate in the Cal Ripken regional tournament. Additionally, Christmas in July will be taking place in downtown Picayune, a perfect recipe to promote the city and get Picayune the national attention it deserves.
From Wednesday through Friday, sales will be held by over 15 merchants in the Picayune Main Street district. This event can serve a two-fold purpose; as a perfect time to support local business and to show how lively and active the city is.
The world knows that south Mississippi takes pride in its sports. However, what they don’t know is how much fun it is to live in a place where everyone waves to everyone else as they walk or drive down the street. A place where tourists can find a friend to mingle with at practically any store; a place where unique memories can be made.
We all know the great things Pearl River County can provide to a family, but once others see what we have to offer, maybe more people will start their own family, or even their own local businesses and contribute to the growth of the county’s two municipalities. A spike in popularity could also persuade large companies to relocate to the area, providing more jobs and allowing for more Pearl River County born residents to stay in their hometowns upon graduation, instead of moving away for better job opportunities.
This is a big week for the county, and I encourage all residents to get out, take advantage of the many sales at the local businesses and take part in showing visitors just how great living in south Mississippi can be.
