In a separate accident later that day, the Mississippi Highway Patrol was called to single vehicle accident near the 11-mile marker on Interstate 59, according to a release from the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

At about 4:50 p.m., the Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers investigated an accident involving a gray 2007 Chevorlet Tahoe, driven by Michelle Spiers, 43, of Carriere, that was traveling south on Interstate 59. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which left the left side of the Interstate before striking a tree on the passenger side, the release states.

“Although the accident is still under investigation, we believe a cause of the accident could be because of the heavy rainfall,” Elkins said.

The driver of the Tahoe was transported to Highland Community Hospital for treatment of her injuries, but pronounced the next morning due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Both accidents are still under investigation. The vehicles of the two fatal crashes did not have any passengers, Elkins said.
