Now in its fifth year, Highland Community Hospital is hosting Time Out for Kidz on Saturday, May 20. Contrary to the name, Director of Emergency Services Scott Dassau RN, BSN, said the safety fair is a fun-filled morning for families to explore emergency vehicles like police cars, fire trucks and ambulance helicopters while learning safety tips.

“The fair is our way of giving back to the community in a fun manner and help families prepare for their eventful summers,” Dassau said.

Because the safety fair aims to keep children safe during summer activities, it will consist of activities such as public service vehicle exploration, poison control, fire safety tips, bicycle safety tips, fingerprinting, water safety, the danger of talking to strangers and proper car seat installation.

This year’s theme for Time Out for Kidz is “Safety Superheroes,” in which each participating child will receive a cape, bicycle helmet and a life vest. Participants of the event will also get a chance to win one of six available bicycles during a giveaway, Dassau said. Other activities like face painting will be available at the safety fair as well as lemonade, healthy snacks and balloons.

“During the summer, people are more active and that sometimes can result in a higher risk of accidents happening. This safety fair will help children and parents learn how to avoid these scenarios… so they can have a safe and exciting summer,” Dassau said.

The Time Out for Kidz safety fair begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 12 p.m.  and will be located in the parking lot.
