As teams are gearing up for the upcoming baseball season, Picayune and Pearl River Central high schools are providing the public with a sneak peek of the teams and a brief look at the talent.

The Maroon Tide baseball team will be hosting its Meet the Tide event Friday at 5:30 p.m. to announce the rosters for the junior high and high school squads. After introductions, the teams will play a nine-inning intrasquad scrimmage to showcase what they have worked on during the offseason. It costs $5 to attend the Meet the Tide event, which will be held at the high school.

On Feb. 18, both the junior high and high school teams for Picayune will play in the Biloxi Jamboree. The JV squad will play Lawrence County at 1:45 p.m. Then, the varsity team will lace up for a double-header, first against Lawrence County at 3 p.m. and then against Biloxi at 4:45 p.m. These games will be played at Biloxi High School.

Pearl River Central is not having a Meet the Devils event, but will host a couple of intrasquad scrimmages for the public to spectate free of charge, PRC Head Coach Neil Walther said.

“This is a time for the public to come and check us out. We’ve been playing all offseason so this scrimmage is really for the public,” Walther said.

On Saturday at noon, the PRC Junior High team will split into two teams and play each other in a nine-inning bout. After that, the high school varsity team will split into two teams, blue and white, to play in an intrasquad scrimmage at 5 p.m.

The Blue Devils will kick-off the season at home versus Hancock on Feb. 24 before traveling to Poplarville on Feb. 25.

Poplarville’s high school baseball team will not hold an event or scrimmage, but the softball team will hold a Meet the Hornets event on Feb. 23. The Hornets baseball team will be participating in the Pearl River Community College Jamboree, playing Hattiesburg on Feb. 18 at 5 p.m.
