Tuesday’s joint general and special election in Pearl River County ended late that night with more than 50 percent of registered voters participating.
A total of 19,015 ballots were cast (56.28 percent), in addition to 2,446 absentee and 1,056 affidavit ballots, according to the Pearl River County Circuit Clerk’s office.
“We were glad to see that high of a turnout,” Pearl River County Circuit Clerk Nance Stokes said.
In the 2012 general election, there was 49.65 percent voter participation. In comparison, other non-presidential elections recorded 30 percent or less voter participation, according to previous unofficial election results.
The 2016 general and special election unofficial results are still being processed to include the absentee and affidavit ballots and are expected to be complete tomorrow, Stokes said.
“It’s a slow process,” she said.
