Every two years, the Mississippi High School Activities Association reclassifies schools in the state. On Thursday, the MHSAA announced the divisions for the 2017-18 football season.

The most notable change in divisions around Pearl River County is that Pascagoula will move up from the Region 4-5A District to join fellow Coast programs in the Region 4-6A District, which includes Gulfport, Harrison Central, D’Iberville, St. Martin, Ocean Springs and Hancock.

Wayne County, who’s football team beat Pascagoula 31-24 in the 2016 MHSAA Football Championship last week in the first round, will take Pascagoula’s spot in the Region 4-5A District. This region includes Picayune, Pearl River Central, Stone, West Harrison, Gautier, Hattiesburg and Long Beach.

On Friday, War Eagle and Maroon Tide fans will catch a glimpse of what division competition will look like as they face one another in the second round of the playoffs in Lee-Triplett Stadium.

In other news, Lawrence County moved from Region 6-4A to join the Hornets, Purvis, Forrest County Agricultural, Greene County, and Sumrall in Region 7-4A. To make room for the Cougars, Columbia joined the Region 8-3A District. They will compete against Seminary, Tylertown, West Marion, Wesson and the newly formed Jefferson Davis County High School, which combines Bassfield and Prentiss.
