Pearl River Central High School’s matchup Friday against the Long Beach Bearcats is as unique as the team’s mascot.

Long Beach has run an offense with two quarterbacks sharing snaps in almost every game this season. The two quarterbacks—Cade Crosby and Jaidon Evans—might have different styles on the field, but their stats are almost identical giving Forrest Williams, Long Beach’s head football coach, a reason to play them both.

Junior quarterback Evans completed 50 of his 99 pass attempts this season for 569 yards. On the other hand, freshman quarterback Crosby has completed 57 of his 100 passing attempts for 537 yards.

Having this duo of quarterbacks and guessing which will produce in a game is like flipping a trick coin. On one side you have Evans, who has thrown three touchdowns and four interceptions while averaging 81.3 yards per game. Then there’s Crosby, who also has three touchdown passes with four interceptions and averages 89.3 yards per game for the Bearcats. The only distinction between these nearly identical quarterbacks is their style of play. Evans is more of a mobile quarterback who can scramble around the field and attack with his legs as well as his arm. Crosby is more of a pocket-passer and tends to stay in the pocket if possible.

Preparing for an unpredictable offense like Long Beach can be a headache for opposing defenses. However, with the Blue Devils losing the past three games, it is no mystery that they will come out Friday night eager for a win.

PRC has proven that it’s capable of beating high-caliber teams in the state—like Harrison Central, which limited No. 2 ranked Picayune Maroon Tide to their lowest scoring game this season in a 21-13 battle—but turnovers have been a problem for the Blue Devils this season.

Last week, even though PRC lost to Gautier 55-26, they always seemed to be in the game. The Blue Devils can produce swift and effective offensive drives with the help of their biggest threat Diante Lenoir running through the openings PRC’s offensive line provides.

However, that offensive line will be tested by Long Beach’s outside linebacker Tyson Callahan, who leads his team with 3.5 sacks for 22 sack yards lost and 12 tackles for a loss of yardage.

PRC (2-4; 0-2) will travel to Long Beach (2-5; 2-2) on Friday. Kickoff for the district game will be at 7 p.m.
