Successful Labor Day enforcement period

Over the Labor Day weekend, the Mississippi Highway Patrol conducted an enforcement period that resulted in over 8,000 citations being issued statewide, states an MHP press release.
According to the release, MHP investigated 170 accidents, with 57 injuries and one fatality.
There were 175 DUI arrests made by MHP troopers, the arrest states.
This was a significant increase in accidents and citations from last year, but with fewer fatalities, the release states.
“We credit this to responsible driving by motorists, statewide law enforcement efforts, and safe driving messages promoted by the media,” MHP Captain Johnny Poulos said in the release.
In Troop K, which includes Pearl River County, there were a total 804 arrests and citations issued, according to the release.
There were 19 DUI arrests made and 41 collisions with six injuries in Troop K, the release states.
The one fatality in the state this weekend occurred in Noxubee County where a vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree, the release states.
Over the weekend, the Picayune Police Department issued 16 tickets and made 12 arrests, two of which were for DUI, Assistant Chief Magri said.
