The Mississippi Highway Patrol announced that a Labor Day Enforcement Period will be held this weekend.
Between Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. and Sept. 5 at midnight, MHP troopers will conduct additional safety checkpoints and patrols, a press release from MHP states.
MHP anticipates heavy traffic this weekend and increased traffic fatalities this year. Troopers urge drivers to wear seatbelts and avoid texting or any other distractions while driving, the release states.
MHP worked 132 accidents, including four fatalities, during the Labor Day weekend last year, according to the release.
Picayune Police Chief Bryan Dawsey said his department will also step up their enforcement efforts this weekend.
The department will have extra patrols and conduct roadblocks around the city, Dawsey said.
Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Shane Tucker said the department has no plans for additional weekend patrols.
