Coloring has a reputation for only being done by children, but most people do not realize the benefits and enjoyment adults can get from the activity.

Every Tuesday, the Poplarville Public Library hosts an adult coloring program for people of all ages that wish to get their mind off reality, Carol Phares, Pearl River County library system director, said.

“This program is the epitome of what the atmosphere is at the Poplarville Public Library. It is a relaxing, soothing and enjoyable place to be,” Phares said.

From 4:30 to 5:45 p.m., people can simply walk into the library and go into the meeting room and begin to unwind with complimentary herbal tea and coffee and soothing music playing in the background.

With ample supplies and table space, the only worry participants should have is coloring in the lines, Phares said.

“The purpose of this program is to show the community that the library is not only a place to come educate yourself, but it is also a place where people can come to just relax,” Phares said.

For children, coloring is a part of literacy. It builds hand-eye coordination at an early age, which Phares said is critical in learning how to read. However the

benefits of coloring do not stop at a certain age.

“If adults have trouble relaxing, coloring is a great practice to pick up,” Phares said. “It is a mindless hobby that you can do when visiting friends or talking with loved ones. It also allows you to be creative. Coming to the library and drinking some tea with friends while coloring is an incredible experience that will truly help anyone relax.”

The adult coloring program began about a year ago, and is held every Tuesday throughout the year. Phares was inspired to begin the program after being gifted her first coloring book from a loved one.

“At first I probably had the same thoughts as every other adult when it comes to coloring, but I gave it a try and it has been a new hobby of mine ever since,” she said. “It gives you a time in the day to just let go of everything and just focus on a simple, yet imaginative action.”
