An accident on Highway 11 on Wednesday caused a power outage in Picayune for several minutes.

The Picayune Police Department was dispatched to Highway 11 near Harris Street at 5:02 p.m. in response to a traffic accident, Picayune Police Assistant Chief Magri said.

Through investigation, it appeared that the driver of a beige 2007 Pontiac G6 was traveling north on Highway 11 when the 16-year-old driver drifted over the center line, Magri said.

The Pontiac struck a silver 2015 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Shannon Pell, 39 of 409 S. Haugh Avenue, Magri said.

The force of the crash caused the Pontiac to overturn and collide with the guide wires supporting the utility pole and causing several power lines to break off, resulting in the power outage, Magri said.

The driver of the Pontiac said he doesn’t remember the accident and Pell complained of pain, but neither were transported to the hospital, Magri said.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and neither driver was charged, Magri said.
