A Picayune home caught fire Friday evening at 199 S. Jackson Street.

Captain Cathy Hunt of the Picayune Fire Department said the station received the call around 1:00 a.m. July 2.

When firefighters arrived on scene the house was fully involved, said Hunt.

The resident, Joshua Kirkland, was inside the home when the fire began, but was able to get out before anything happened said Picayune Fire Marshal Pat Weaver.

“I was sitting in my living room reading a book when the smoke alarm went off,” said Kirkland. “I saw smoke coming from down the hall from the spare bedroom.”

Kirkland drew back a curtain that hung in the doorway and saw the back wall of the room in flames. Smoke had starting spreading throughout the house, said Kirkland.

He grabbed his parrot in its cage and ran outside as the flames spread, said Kirkland.

Everything in the home was destroyed except for the clothes on his back, said Kirkland.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames rather quickly, said Hunt. The fire was extinguished by the time her truck arrived from the station at the north end of town.

Kirkland said that the fire was put out within the first 10 minutes after his call.

As of right now, there is no known cause of the fire, said Hunt, though Kirkland said he believed there was an electrical issue.

The house is still standing, but the inside is gutted, said Hunt.

Weaver ruled the cause of the fire as accidental fire and said that according to his investigation it started in the bedroom from an undetermined cause.
