A five-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson after complications from a freshwater drowning in Hillsdale, said Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage.

Around 7:42 p.m. on June 24, the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department received a medical call to Rault Dive in Lumberton, said Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Shane Tucker.

Three deputies responded to the call and found 5-year-old Preston James Wiley was being administered chest compressions by his grandmother, said Tucker.

His grandmother had found Wiley in a blow up pool, lying face down and having a seizure, said Tucker.

After pulling Wiley out of the pool and finding him unconscious, she began CPR, said Tucker.

The deputies continued to administer CPR until the paramedics arrived about 15 minutes later, said Tucker.

Wiley was transported to Forrest General Hospital and was later transferred to UMC in Jackson, said Tucker.

The County Coroner’s Office is still investigating the full cause of Wiley’s death, said Turnage.
