Beginning today and lasting until tomorrow, people who enjoy finding a good deal can peruse the items for sale at Poplarville’s Teen Challenge of Mississippi’s Summer Benefit Sale.
In doing so, people will be contributing to the group’s scholarship fund, which helps offset the costs for a program that helps women suffering from addiction.
Teen Challenge Fundraising Director Erica Barber said many women suffering from addiction don’t have money to pay for Teen Challenge’s program.
Teen Challenge is a non-profit residential ministry for women 18 and older who struggle with life controlling issues, such as drug and alcohol addiction.
According to previous coverage of the 16-bed facility, the women are required to commit to one year at the facility, where staff members closely supervise them. Their daily activities consist of Bible study, character study and work ethics training.
“When people who don’t have money come for help, we don’t turn them away,” Barber said.
The benefit sale is one of their biggest fundraisers, she said. Barber added that there is always a good turnout for the sale, which has been held for the past three years.
There will be items for sale including clothing, furniture and seasonal decorations, Barber said. Members of the community donate all of these items, she added.
Last year, Teen Challenge established a work program called Finishing Touches where women refurbish and sell used and donated furniture, according to previous coverage.
These items will also be available for purchase during the sale, Barber said.
“We also got a bunch of clothing and shoes donated from a boutique that closed,” Barber said. “Churches also donate items. Sometimes people just drop off stuff when God puts it on their heart.”
The Summer Benefit Sale will be held today from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Teen Challenge is located at 5 Buford Lane in Poplarville.
