Second graders show they have leadership

Monday, several famous Mississippians attended the Pearl River County School District board of trustees meeting.
They included Britney Spears, Jim Henson, Jimmy Buffett, Leann Rimes, Faith Hill and Elvis Presley. Second graders from PRC Lower Elementary dressed as the famous icons and presented a short biography of each person to the board.
PRC Lower Elementary assistant principal Jennifer Teal told board members their faculty recently studied the book “The Leader in Me.”
“It’s about empowering students and giving them their own voice,” Teal said.
PRC Lower Elementary assistant principal Shari Franklin said they visited a school in Vicksburg, where the students were in control of the program.
“It’s a great book and discusses developing the total child, finding all their gifts and talents, not just the academic ones,” she added.

In other action:
• Mike Posey, director of student services for the PRC school district, updated the board about Excel By 5. Posey said they have become a candidate community and the process can take up to two years. He added that Poplarville Excel By 5 officials have been helping them develop their resources. The program provides resources to children younger than the age of five to prepare them for kindergarten.
• PRC Curriculum Coordinator Kimberly Alford also made an announcement to the board regarding AdvanceEd, which is an accreditation model. The high school has been AdvanceEd accredited for several years and the district is now an approved candidate for district wide accreditation, Alford said. The external review will be held from October to November 2. AdvanceEd officials will examine the district’s policies and curriculum, student achievement and surveys completed by parents, members of the community, students and staff, Alford said. School board members interviewed on October 31. Alford told the board it’s a prestigious recognition.
• The board accepted the resignation of Andrew Kivlan as PRCSD Fall/Winter Athletic Director, effective June 30.
• The board approved releasing Eric Collins from his contract with PRCSD on April 1.
• The board approved Chris Teal to replace Collins as Spring Sports Athletic Director with supplement for the remainder of the 2015-2016 year.
The next board meeting will be held on May 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the boardroom located at the district’s central office on Highway 11.
