Due to a recent forecast of severe weather conditions, the 2016 Area II Special Olympics Track and Field competitions, hosted by the John C. Stennis Space Center, has been cancelled.
The event was scheduled to take place this Saturday, a release from Stennis Space Center states.
“Recent inclement weather conditions have caused soggy field conditions which could pose safety concerns for the athletes,” the release states. “In addition, recent flooding has not subsided and is causing issues for local residents. The Area III games will not be rescheduled this year, but athletes are encouraged to continue training for the state game at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi on May 20-21.”
The Special Olympics committee expressed their thanks in the release to all volunteers and corporate and individual sponsors for their contributions and hard work in preparation for the annual games, the release states.
