Tuesday, the Poplarville Board of Aldermen met with Jason Lamb, an engineer with Walker and Associates in Hattiesburg, to discuss the requirements needed to submit a lease request for Railroad Park, which is located on South Main Street across the street from Apples Limited.
Norfolk Southern owns the land and the board plans to lease the property as a space for community events or a farmer’s market.
Before that can happen, the board must first submit a comprehensive outline of their plans, which is what Lamb will provide the city.
Poplarville Mayor Brad Necaise said he plans to seek grant opportunities to help enhance the area.
In another matter, the board discussed the disposal of dog waste and the placement of a swim diaper dispenser at City Park.
Necaise told the board he had been researching the cost of dispensers for the disposal of dog waste. He said they would need about two, which would be placed in areas other than the designated dog area. Dogs are allowed in the park, but must be kept on a leash at all times. The cost of one dispenser is $275, Necaise said.
The board agreed to move forward with the purchase of the dispensers.
Necaise has also been searching for a swim diaper dispenser. Children who are not potty trained must wear a swim diaper while playing on the splash pad.
The mayor mentioned a coin-operated stainless machine, which would cost about $627.
The board took this matter under advisement.
In other action:
–– The board voted to hire Walker and Associates to create a map of the Poplarville City Cemetery. “The current map is fragile and in bad shape, since it was made in the 1800’s,” Public Works Director Sam Hale told the board.
–– Hale said he is still waiting on quotes for outside repairs to the building located at 101 N. Main Street.
The next board meeting will be held on March 1 at 5 p.m. in the board room at City Hall.
