Battling for two worthy causes

Once again, the first responders of Pearl River County have demonstrated their desire to not only help this county’s residents, but also others who may be in need of a pint of a blood.
Thursday, police officers, sheriff’s deputies and firefighters braved a needle during The Blood Center’s Battle of the Badges.
As a result of the friendly competition, 74 units of blood were collected, which will help about 220 people. The blood is divided into three parts, platelets, plasma and red blood cells.
Members of the community also showed up in support of their local first responders.
But the donations didn’t stop there. The Blood Center donated $5 for every unit raised to Pearl River County’s Puttin on the Pink, an organization which provides necessary services to women fighting breast cancer.
In reality, more people will be helped thanks to the donation to Puttin on Pink.
The organization provides vouchers for mammograms and travel assistance for countless women throughout Pearl River County.
The Item would like to thank The Blood Center and all of our first responders for their hard work coordinating this event.
We suspect that a day in the life of a first responder can be quite busy and laden with responsibilities.
Efforts are being made daily by our police departments to rid the streets of drugs and our firefighters are always ready to walk into uncertainty to save a life from a fire.
These aren’t easy jobs and we salute the men and women who have dedicated their lives to this service.
