Ring in the New Year with your family

Thursday, many people in Pearl River County will be ringing in the new year with parties, fireworks and laughter.
A lot of traditions are centered on adult-themed activities. However, we know that many of our readers have small children who are just as excited to participate in the revelry of the evening. Here are some ideas to keep the younger generations engaged in the yearly tradition.
Break out the board games. In an era where most children enjoy playing video games as opposed to classics such as Candy Land and Mouse Trap, the idea of sitting around a table engaging in friendly competition has waned. Games such as charades and Apples to Apples are other fun-filled ways to pass the time.
Watch a family movie. Pop some popcorn, gather the blankets, turn down the lights and put on your favorite family-friendly film. Even better, find a classic cartoon or film you enjoyed as a child. Sharing your childhood favorites with your children is a great way to bond and reminisce.
Shoot fireworks. Most children enjoy watching fireworks. If you’re able to in your area, watch their eyes light up as the bursts of colors pop in the sky. Make sure to do so safely and read up on firework precautions.
Start a new tradition. Many families already have rituals in place for New Year’s celebrations. Find something everyone likes to do and try to do a variation of it each year.
No matter what you and your family decide to do to celebrate this occasion, make sure to do it safely and responsibly.
The important thing is to spend time with your loved ones, make goals for the upcoming year and be thankful for the blessings of the past year.
