PRCC to offer masonry, welding night classes

Anyone looking to learn new job skills can sign up for night masonry and welding courses at Pearl River Community College.

Starting in the spring 2016 semester, PRCC will provide a basic masonry course, which will meet Tuesday and Thursday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. from Jan. 12 through April 28 at the masonry shop on the Poplarville campus, according to a press release from PRCC.

The course will provide a masonry tender/helper certificate, which includes applications for a 10-hour OSHA certification, a basic lift truck OSHA certification and a NCCER credential in core curriculum and an introduction to masonry, plus tools and equipment and safety, the press release states.

The cost is $150 per student. During class, students must wear steel-toed boots and safety glasses.

A welding course will also be offered this upcoming semester. Students will be able to gain an industry-recognized certificate in welding, including applications for a 10-hour OSHA certification, a basic lift truck operator OSHA certification and a NCCER credentials in Core Curriculum Introductory Craft Skills and Level I and II welding modules. The cost per student is $250.

Classes will meet from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from Jan. 11 to April 27 at the welding shop inside the Career Education Building on the Poplarville campus, according to the press release.

Applicants must have a welding shield, gloves and cap, steel-toed shoes, a long sleeve shirt, earplugs and safety glasses.

Students more than 18-years-old can apply to either course by calling Cheryl Frierson at 601-403-1113. The completed application must be turned in along with a clean drug screen at the student’s expense and a receipt from the PRCC business office for payment in full. The documents must be turned in to Sheila Smith in the Career Education Building on the Poplarville campus.

WIA tuition assistance is available to qualified applicants through WIN Job Centers. Tuition assistance is also available via the Department of Human Services’ SNAP Employment and Training fund. For information about applying, contact Brad Necaise at 601-569-1910 or blnecaise@prcc.edu.
