Saturday the Pearl River County SPCA will hold another of their popular vaccination and microchip clinics.

Judy Wheaton, the director of the SPCA, said the clinic brought out about 450 animals in the spring, and this time around they’re moving the event to Jack Read Park on Goodyear Boulevard.

“We’re just super excited about the response we get,” she said.

According to a flier, At the clinic, cats and dogs can get all manner of shots, including rabies and vaccinations, and puppy and kitten series shots. In addition, pets can be microchipped, too.

The rabies and vaccinations are $7 each, microchipping is $10. The series shots are $25, and all fees must be paid in cash.

Wheaton said the SPCA tries to add something new to each event and this time, the are offering DNA testing for dogs. The test is $65, and can help determine a dog’s breed or mix of breeds. The clinic will also offer tests for heartworms and bordetella, also known as kennel cough. Those tests are $10 and $7, respectively.

Wheaton said the SPCA ran out of rabies shots at their spring clinic after 450 doses had been administered, but this year they’ll have 600 doses on hand.

To coordinate a day of hundreds of people, cats and dogs, Wheaton said she counts on 10 people handling the paperwork and usually help from the Picayune Police Department coordinating traffic, though this weekend the police will also have to handle the Run with the Pigs event, down Goodyear Boulevard at the Crosby Commons.

Wheaton added that people who have numerous pets may get them treated in their car.

“If someone has 10 animals, (the vet) will go to their vehicle,” Wheaton said.

The clinic is a project of the SPCA , the Mississippi Board of Animal Health, the Mississippi Veterinary Medical Association and the State Department of Health, and the SPCA will be taking donations Saturday.
