Helen G. Hamton was born on April 13, 1924, to the late Willie and Evangeline Sellers in Picayune, MS.

Helen excelled in mathematics and science, and after graduating from high school, earned scholarships to attend Texas Southern University (TSU). There she obtained both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees and earned a remarkable distinction: she was the first female to graduate from the university with a master’s in chemistry.

Evangeline’s confidence in her daughter was well placed. While attending TSU, Helen joined Zeta Phi Beta. To recognize her tireless devotion to Zeta, she was awarded the prestigious “Lady of the Year Award.”

Her sorority would impact her life in unexpected, but wonderful ways. It was through the Zeta’s that she met Carrie Hampton, who would become one of her lifelong friends. Carrie then introduced her to her brother. It seemed the Hampton connection was a powerful one, because Tom L Hampton II asked for Helen’s hand in marriage.

Tom and Helen were blessed with five children: Carol, Tom, Mike, Larry and William. Helen was a loving and doting mother who stressed the value of church and education in her home.

God was first in her life; she was a life long member of Little Providence Baptist Church, where she served as Mother of the Church until her transition. She served as a teacher and member for almost 50 years in Mission #2.

Helen is survived by her five children and their spouses, (Carol and James Avery; Tom and Stephanie Hampton; Mike and Glenda Hampton; Larry and Vickie Hampton and William Hampton), eight Grand children (Paul Avery, Mike Hampton Jr, Phillip Hampton, Glenise Hampton, Krystal Avery, Christopher Hampton, Selah Hampton, and Aliyah Hampton); seven Great Grand Childern (Michael, TeCarol, Jay, Morgan, Jason, Cody, and Savannah); and two Great Great Grand Childern (Jimya, Samarion).

Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church. Interment will be in Catahoula Cemetery. Entrusted to Brown’s Funeral Home.
