This month Animal Adoption Society, Inc. will be hosting their annual fundraisers to raise money for the care of homeless animals in Pearl River County.
The non-profit, which was created in 1994 by president Evelyn Agnelly, is managed by volunteers who foster and support stray animals.
The first event, which is not a fundraiser, will be held at 11 a.m. at Ruth Memorial Presbyterian Church, located at 809 S. Julia St., Poplarville.
“The Rev. Sally-Lodge Teel will be blessing the animals after the worship service,” Agnelly said. “God put them here for us to love and take care of. He blesses them as he blesses us. They give us so much pleasure. We are excited about the blessing of the animals and if you can’t bring your animal, bring a picture.”
Anyone can bring their pets and Agnelly asks that dogs be placed on leashes, cats kept in carriers and smaller animals be brought in cages.
AAS is also currently accepting donations for their annual fall garage sale to be held on Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon at 2655 Hwy. 43 S. in Picayune. The group also hosts one in the spring.
All donations are tax-deductible, Agnelly said, and donors will be given a receipt.
They are seeking gently used clothing and household items, she said.
“Whatever we have left over will be donated to Jacob’s Well for their ministry,” Agnelly said. “We will be helping animals and people.”
The group’s second online auction will be begin on Nov. 15 and last about a week, she said. Interested people can bid on items on the group’s Facebook page.
“So far we will have an original photograph donated by a New Orleans photographer and other, different small items and gift certificates at different prices,” Agnelly said. “We are still accepting donations from local businesses.”
On the third Saturday of the month, the group brings adoptable animals to Walmart in Picayune for an adoption event, she said. Every third Thursday, the animals are brought to the Pear River County Nursing Home to visit with residents.
All animals adopted through the AAS have been spayed or neutered, administered heartworm and flea preventative medications and are up-to-date on shots, Agnelly said.
