Outdoor enthusiasts across Mississippi will flock to stores this weekend for the Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday. Consumers will be able to purchase firearms, ammunition and certain hunting supplies tax-free during this period while exercising their right to “keep and bear arms,” as stated in the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Several gun shops, including Little River Outdoors in Poplarville and Davis Sports and Outdoors, will offer tax-free products during the holiday. Scotty Davis, owner of Davis Sports and Outdoors, said they plan to offer tax-free items during their regular business hours on Friday and Saturday. “If someone comes in during that time and wants a particular item that we don’t have in the store, we can order it for them and they can still get products tax-free,” Davis said. The items exempt from sales tax during this period include ammunition such as bullets and shotgun shells; firearms like pistols and revolvers; and some hunting gear, including archery equipment, hearing protection and holsters, according to the Mississippi Department of Revenue’s website. Mississippi adopted the tax holiday last year during a legislative session. The holiday applies to all statewide purchases of ammunition, firearms and hunting supplies. The tax break will begin Friday, Sept. 4 at 12:01 a.m. and last until midnight Sunday, Sept. 6. For more information about eligible and non-eligible items, visit Mississippi Department of Revenue’s website at https://www.dor.ms.gov.
