The Picayune Dancers are set to perform at this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. In order to raise the funds necessary to cover all travel expenses, the team plans to host a “Fun Day” and 5K Run/Walk on Saturday.

The entire community is invited to attend the event, which begins at 1 p.m. at Jack Read Park. Numerous family-friendly activities will be held before the race begins, said Michelle Williams, one of the parents organizing the team’s fundraising efforts.

The activities include a Jail-n-Bail, raffles and a silent auction. The event will also feature New York-style hot dogs, drinks, face painting and a slide. All proceeds will go towards the team’s trip to New York City, Williams said.

Registration for the one-mile fun run and 5K Run/Walk begin at 4 p.m. Race T-shirt’s will be available on a first come first serve basis, Williams said.

The one-mile fun run begins at 7 p.m. and the 5K Run/Walk starts at 7:30 p.m., Williams said.

The team ultimately hopes to raise $30,000 in order to fund the 12 dancers performing during the parade, Williams said. The team has held fundraisers in the past for the trip.

“We’re hoping and praying this turns out well for the girls,” William said.

Williams also said the chance to perform during the parade is a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for the girls, who currently attend Picayune Memorial High School.

During their stay in New York City, the girls will visit popular attractions, including the Rockettes and Broadway, Williams said.

“It’s a big thing for these girls and it has been an aspiration of theirs to dance in front of all those people,” Williams said.
