The Pearl River County Arts League has teamed up with the Pearl River County SPCA to promote a love of art and animals. However, this isn’t the groups’ first collaboration, PRCAL President Gail Sheasby said.
“Artists from our group donate paintings for the SPCA to raffle off during Picayune’s street fairs,” Sheasby said. “I got the idea when the SPCA enlarged the front of their building. I talked to the ladies and told them we wanted to put some of our paintings on the walls.”
What was once a blank wall in the shelter is now covered with eight colorful creations by some of Pearl River County’s most talented artists. The eight paintings feature dogs and cats.
The artwork is for sale and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the shelter, Sheasby said. However, some of the artists have chosen to donate all of their proceeds.
The paintings will be rotated every three months, Sheasby said.
“Animals are very near and dear to my heart and to those who paint them,” Sheasby said.
PRCSPCA Shelter Director Judy Wheaton said she is very excited about the collaboration.
“The donations we received from the community go specifically to the animals, whether it be for medicine or food bowls,” Wheaton said. “People can now come here and look at art and animals.”
The eight paintings can be purchased at the PRCSPCA with cash or credit card, Wheaton said.
This Saturday, the PRCSPCA will be hosting a puppy shower from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to previous Item coverage. Puppy adoptions, which usually range from $110 to $150, will be half off and pet owners can get their dogs washed for $5.
The shelter is also holding a raffle for a dog bed handmade by Rhonda Furby, Wheaton said.
According to previous coverage, participants can donate $5 to $20 for one ticket, $21 to $40 for two tickets, $41 to $60 for three tickets, $61 to $80 for four tickets and $81 for six tickets.
Raffle tickets will be on sale until the end of the month, Wheaton said.
The PRCSPCA is located at 1700 Palestine Rd. and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Contact staff by phone at 601-798-8000.
