Amtrak notice for carry-on baggage fees

Amtrak recently released carry-on baggage rules that will become effective in October.

The railroad passenger company will charge travelers a $20 fee for each excess and oversize carry-on baggage and personal item on board beginning Oct. 1, according to a press release from Amtrak.

Picayune houses an Amtrak station at the Intermodal Tourist Center and Museum. The Amtrak passenger line called, the Crescent provides passengers with transportation from New York to New Orleans, stopping twice a day in Picayune around 8:15 a.m. and 5 p.m., according to previous Item coverage.

Passengers traveling to any city will be charged a $20 fee for each carry-on and personal item respectively above the quantity and size limits established in Amtrak’s baggage policy.

Each passenger can bring two carry-on bags on board, each weighing no more than 50 pounds. Regarding personal items, each passenger is allowed to bring two personal items on board weighing a maximum of 25 pounds each. Items include small bags, purses, backpacks, pillows and blankets. The two personal items aren’t included toward the carry-on baggage limit, according to the release.

Each bag and personal item will be charged an extra $20 excess and oversize fee if it exceeds the weight restriction, according to the release.

Passengers can pay the extra fee at the station prior to their boarding time or onboard, the release stated.

The station is located at 200 Hwy. 11 S.
