The Picayune Prodigies won the state championship this weekend in Hurley, Mississippi.
All of the teams the Prodigies faced at the tournament were either winners in their own districts or runners up, said Head coach Donnie Kellar.
The tournament began on Friday, and lasted until Sunday. The Prodigies played in four games and went undefeated. Picayune beat Petal in the semi-finals 10-9, and went on to beat Longbeach 12-5 for the championship.
The Prodigies are now 25-3 on the season, and have scored a season total of 413 runs, said Team Manager Geri Grubbs. Grubbs keeps all the stats for the team, and is also the announcer for all Picayune Maroon Tide sporting events.
“I have been doing Picayune sports all my life, I just like doing it,” said Grubbs.
The Prodigies will be traveling to Bryant, Arkansas on July 8 for the Southwest Regional Tournament, where they will face teams from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
The team is selling raffle tickets to raise money for the trip. A drawing will be held on Friday, which will be for a Yeti cooler.
To purchase raffle tickets or make a donation to the team contact Kellar at 601-916-4173 or Grubbs at 601-590-4296.
