Give back this summer

Poverty spreads like wildfire in countries across the globe, including right here in America. Every day, people go without food, water or shelter—necessities many of us take for granted. However, we can do something to change that. Nationwide, numerous organizations such as the Salvation Army are fighting against hunger and poverty.

The Salvation Army’s mission is “to feed, to clothe, to comfort, to care,” according to their website. They operate 7,546 centers across the United States, including several in Mississippi.

Recently, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Area Command of the Salvation Army celebrated 150 years of service.

The organization strives towards a brighter future by providing assistance in times of economic hardships and natural disasters to those who need it most.

The center offers food and shelter, sells donated items at their thrift stores located in Gautier and Gulfport and works with the WIN Job Center and Gulf Coast Community College to help people find employment. They currently serve six counties, including Pearl River, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, George and Stone.

However, the center has noticed a decrease in food donations during the summer months. The Mississippi heat takes a toll on many, especially when they don’t have a place to cool off.

Take a couple of minutes of your time to look through your kitchen pantry for food supplies and donate some to your local center.

We can’t turn our backs on people in need, even in cities like Picayune or Gulfport. Times are tough for everybody. It’s even tougher on those who don’t have access to shelter, food or water. Everyone deserves a second chance and a helping hand.

Just by donating food, you can make a difference in someone’s life.

For more information, call the center at 228-374-8301 or visit http://salvationarmyalm.org/msgulfcoast/. There are several drop-off locations, including the Salvation Army Food Pantry at 2019 22nd St. in Gulfport, the Family Store in Gulfport or the Kroc Center in Biloxi.

You can also donate items to the local Goodwill located at 901 Palestine Rd.
