Friday, senior citizens in the community were honored during the Senior Center of South Pearl River County’s 2nd annual shrimp boil.

The event was sponsored by St. Joseph Hospice, which provides specialized care to patients facing terminal illness and their families throughout Mississippi, Louisiana, Southeast Texas and South Alabama, according to the carpenterhealthnetwork.com.

During the event, numerous community outreach volunteers from St. Joseph Hospice served drinks and food, which included corn, potatoes and an estimated 180 pounds of freshly boiled shrimp.

Mark Crowson, regional director of operations at St. Joseph Hospice, said their employees enjoy giving back to the community.

“When we come to a city we do business in we like to give back as much as we can,” Crowson said.

Kathleen Penton, the center’s participants coordinator, said the event was a way to thank seniors in the community for their participation at the center.

“We hope this event has enriched their lives in some way,” Penton said.

Rosie Davis said she’s been coming to the center for the past six years.

“I’ve really enjoyed this center and this event really means a lot to me,” Davis said.

Bernice Fucci has been coming to the center for the past four months because she enjoys the activities they offer.

“I really appreciate the center and I’m glad they have a place for us to come to. Everybody’s really nice here,” Fucci said.

The event not only recognized seniors in the community but the city and county officials who’ve contributed to the center in the past.

The center is located at 45 El Patch Parkway. For more information about the center, visit their Facebook page at Senior Center of South Pearl River County or call (601) 798-9892.
