A lane closure resulting from a one-vehicle accident that occurred on Interstate 59 northbound caused a two-vehicle wreck on the southbound lane Wednesday morning.

Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to the first accident in the northbound lane at 6:54 a.m., which involved a semi-trailer truck that drove onto the median and as a result got stuck, Mississippi Highway Patrol Cpl. Benjamin Seibert said.

The driver, identified as 57-year-old Donny Small of Gretna, La., was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Detectives are currently investigating the cause of the accident, Seibert said.

As a result of the accident, I59 southbound lane was closed to make way for a wrecker to remove the 18-wheeler, which led to the two-vehicle accident on I59 southbound, Seibert said.

At 8:48 a.m., troopers responded to I59 southbound in reference to the two-vehicle accident. In the accident, a silver Cadillac CTS reportedly rear-ended a separate 18-wheeler, which was stopped due to the left lane closure. The vehicle reportedly wedged underneath the trailer. The driver of the Cadillac, identified as 66-year-old Robert Earl Rogers of Natalbany, La., who was the only occupant inside the vehicle, was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries, Seibert said.

Through the initial investigation, deputies learned the car was impacted mostly on the passenger side, saving the driver’s life, Seibert said.

The driver of the trailer, identified as 41-year-old August Lee Furtick of Talladega, Ala., sustained no injuries, Seibert said.
