Tuesday morning at 2:44 officers from the Picayune Police Department responded to a traffic accident on Interstate 59 in the southbound lanes.
There were two vehicles involved in the accident, a black Chevy Impala, and an 18-wheeler, said Magri.
Both vehicles were heading south, when the car veered into the left lane striking the 18-wheeler. The truck left the roadway and rolled over in the median. The car also ran off the interstate, said Magri.
The driver of the truck, Freddie Richardson of Baton Rouge Louisiana, pulled the driver out of the car after it began to catch on fire, said Magri.
When the officers arrived on scene both vehicles were fully engulfed in flames. Officers then helped Richardson pull the driver, 35-year-old Norman Clemons of Philadelphia, Mississippi, to safety, said Magri.
Clemons was transported to the hospital with minor lacerations to his arm.
Richardson did not require medical care, said Magri.
The Picayune Fire Department also responded to the call.
Officers did not leave the scene of the accident until 1:31 p.m. after everything had been picked up and cleared from the road, said Magri.
