The flamingo has landed

Colorful flamingos will soon be migrating to Picayune.
The children’s ministry at Pine Grove Baptist Church is currently hosting a Flock-a-Friend fundraiser.
Children’s minister Donald Balch said this is a fun method of raising money for the children to attend summer camp.
“This year we are taking the children to CentriKid Camp in Kentucky,” Balch said. “There are about four or five children that cannot afford the costs and we raise money to help keep their costs down.”
CentriKid Camp is a Bible based camp affiliated with the Lifeway organization, Balch said. During the weeklong adventure, children participate in games, swimming and scripture related activities.
“This year’s theme is “F.I.T.,” which stands for faith in training,” Balch said. “The weeklong camp will focus on getting in spiritual shape.”
The cost for each child is $285 and the bus transportation costs about $6,000, Balch said. Children that can afford the trip are charged a minimal amount and some of the ministry’s budget is utilized, Balch said.
The fundraiser involves the placement of flamingos in residential yards, Balch said. The group does not flock businesses.
For $15 the group will flock anyone. Once flocked, homeowners can either pay $10 to have them removed or leave the birds there for five days.
People can also purchase flock me not insurance for $25 to ensure their yard will remain flamingo free, Balch said. Those flocked will receive a sheet of paper with instructions to remove the flock or flock another home.
Anyone wishing to flock someone or purchase insurance can contact Balch at 601-916-0047.

“This is a fun way to raise money and awareness,” Balch said. “It also gives us the opportunity to share our faith with others.”
