John Edward Hammett, known affectionately to those who loved him as Jed, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the age of 76.  John was a proud New Orleanian and had been a resident of New Orleans, Henleyfield, Mississippi and Austin, Texas. He attended Isidore Newman School and Tulane University

He was preceded in death by his father Henry Hammett and his wife Becky, and his mother Alma Schwartz and her husband Joseph.  He was the brother of Barbara Bagley, Joseph Schwartz and the late Donald Hammett, Harry Hammett, Robert Hammett, and Alma Hammett.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sallye Hammett. He is survived by his two sons David Hammett and his wife Kelly of Discovery Bay, California, Richard Hammett and his wife Amy of Denver, Colorado and their children Kate, Emma, and Jack; and many nieces, nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services presided by Rev. Peter Hammett, O.S.B. of St. Joseph Abbey in the Chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard on Friday, March 13, 2015 at 3:00 p.m.  Visitation is from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.  Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery.  For those desiring, donations may be made to St. Joseph Abbey, St. Benedict, LA.
