Norman L. Sumpter

Norman L. Sumpter, age 73, of Westville FL, died on the 19th day of February 2015 at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was born on October 4, 1941 in McCune, KS to John and Florence Sumpter. He was married on October 7, 1961, in McCune, KS, to Connie Wright.

During his lifetime, he worked for the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center, Marathon Oil Company, Sumpter Oil and Gas, Williams Engineering, and the Grand Casino.

He was an avid New Orleans Saints fan and proudly wore the 2009 Super Bowl Champs jacket.

Norman and Connie were blessed with two sons and their wives, Doug and Susan of Westville, FL and Bryan and Lawanda of Poplarville, Miss. He loved and cherished his four grandchildren, Douglas Jr., John Michael, Whitney, and Jade and 3 step-grandsons, Andrew, Brandon and Patrick Olson and his faithful lab, Maggie.

Norman was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his first great-grandchild, in April, by Whitney and Travis Magee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill, Floyd and Johnny; and sister, Nadine.

He is survived by his wife; children; grandchildren; sister, Virginia Perkins and husband John of Lincoln CA; in-laws, Freda Wright Graver, Jim and JoAn McManus, Earl and Norma Burns, Ken and Irene Wright, and Don Wright; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society’s Joe Lee Griffin Hope Lodge in Birmingham, AL or St. Judes Hospital for Children in his memory.

The family wishes to thank all our friends and neighbors for their faithful love and prayers, Dr. John Simmons and staff of Geneva, AL and Dr. Lauren Hughey and staff of the Dermatology Dept. of UAB in Birmingham, AL for their commendable efforts to provide comfort and specialized treatment. Norman lived a life based on loyalty, love and laughter.
