Once again the students in the Poplarville School District were awarded for their near perfect attendance during the month of October.
Last week, superintendent Carl Merritt dyed his mustache pink as incentive for students to attend school and raise awareness for breast cancer month.
Friday, students were treated to ‘‘Dancing in the Streets’’ with Kicker 108’s radio station host Lisa ‘‘Momma’’ Vee.
Lisa can be heard in the mornings on her show Bryan and Momma.
“I’m here today to dance, play some music and have fun,” Vee said. “All students should attend school, have fun and live their dreams.”
The Poplarville PTO sponsored an ice cream social fundraiser at the event.
The students participating in the event achieved at least 96 percent attendance for October, Middle School Principal Heidi Dylan said. “We are proud of our students and encourage them to keep up the good work.”
The students were dressed in their favorite team shirts to celebrate ‘‘Teaming up against drugs’’, assistant principal Vicky Boone said. Friday marked the last day of the school’s observance of Red Ribbon week.
Eighth-grader Karlee Price said she listens to Kicker 108 all the time and it’s nice to have a break from classes.
“I think we deserve it. We’ve been working hard on our grades,” Price said.
Ariel Hines is in the seventh grade and she said the ice cream was very delicious.
“It’s been a pretty good party so far,” Hines said. “We get to come outside, hang with friends and dance.”
Eighth-grader Shaine Collier said that the event was pretty fun.
“We don’t get to do this type of thing that often and it’s nice to do something new,” Collier said. “I see a lot of smiles and laughing out here and I think that the principals thought it was a good idea and so do I.”
