Purley Burge

Purley P. (Harry) Burge, 89, passed from this life Wednesday, June 18, 2014. Born in Picayune, MS, he was the son of the late James and Rhoda (Taylor) Burge. Harry served his country with distinction and honor as an Army veteran of World War II. Orphaned at age 7 he enlisted in the Army at age 15 and participated in battles in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was honorably discharged in 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. His disabilities from military service did not hinder his ambition to learn and succeed. He was a graduate of Boston University (BS Public Relations), Penn State University (BS Agricultural Education) and University of Buffalo, (MS in Elementary Education). For 25 years he owned Early Childhood Publications Co. of Buffalo, NY. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and The Military Order of the Purple Heart. Harry was especially proud of his marriage of 41 years to his wife Rosella Ann (Allenza) Burge. He is also survived by his children, Stephen, Malcolm and Margaret, grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. Siblings who oreceded Harry were Vaud, Lawrence, Verdie, Wilmer, Minnie Irene, Harvey, Maudie, Elizabeth, Dewitt and Rhoda Mae Smith. Harry is reunited with his parents and no longer an orphan. “May the angels guide you-we shall meet again”. Funeral Services will be held at the Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services 1511 Buenos Aires Blvd., The Villages on Friday June 27, 2014 at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL. The family will receive relatives and friends at a visitation to be held on Friday one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Inverness, FL.
