Weathersby named to All-American team

Poplarville’s Hayes Weathersby ended his junior college golf career in fine fashion last week.

Weathersby, a sophomore at Gulf Coast Community College, finished fourth individually and was named an NJCAA All-America at the NJCAA Division II golf tournament. In Plymouth, Indiana. The Southern Miss signee from shot 74-75-69-75–293 to lead the Bulldogs to a third place spot, the program’s best-ever finish.

The Bulldogs compiled a four-day total of 62-over 1,214, behind only national champion Walters State of Tennessee (37-over, 1,189) and Mesa of Arizona (48-over, 1,200). Seven-time Region 23 champion Gulf Coast was in seventh place after Tuesday’s opening round at Swan Lake Resort, but steadily made up ground.

“At the beginning of the season, we felt like we could achieve this,” said Gulf Coast golf coach Tommy Snell. “Now that we’ve done it, the feeling is amazing. I couldn’t be prouder of this group of young men.”

The Gulf Coast team is made up of Weathersby, Jake Pritchard, Fant Carpenter, Adam Ham and Danny De Los Santos.

North Iowa Area’s Levi Fink was tournament medalist at 77-68-72-70–287.

Weathersby, who was also named a Ping All-American, shot a 69 on Thursday and to move up into contention for the national honors.
