Hornets pick up big victory at Columbia

COLUMBIA — Poplarville stunned Columbia 10-7 in the first game of a Class 4A South State playoff second round series Thursday night.

Chandler Ray drove in four runs in the win, and the Hornets broke open a 5-5 tie with five runs in the top of the seventh to take the win. Game two will take place tonight in Poplarville at 6 p.m. A win would wrap up the series for the Hornets.

Columbia was 14-1 at home this season entering Thursday’s game, before the Hornets pulled off the big win.

Blake Ladner picked up the win for the Hornets. Poplarville is expected to send junior southpaw Hayden Freeman to the hill tonight to try and wrap up the series.

Austin Darden added a pair of run scoring singles to the winning effort. Darden, Justin Oliver and Luke Goodwen all drove in runs in the seventh, and Ray had a two-run double.
