A mother and son were arrested Monday after breaking into a home in Carriere, said Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Shane Tucker.
Tucker said deputies got a call on Monday at 3:46 a.m. about a burglary in the 600 block of East Ridge Drive in Carriere.
A female victim was home when someone kicked in the front door of her home. The victim was able to barricade herself in the back bedroom, Tucker said.
The two suspects, Laverna Fay Duncan, 38, of 177 Will Thompson Rd., Picayune and her 17-year-old son, whose identity can’t be released because he is a juvenile, came into the house yelling and screaming before stealing several electronic items.
The victim reported the following items as stolen: a Acer notebook computer, a laptop computer, a Toshiba notebook computer, a computer tablet and two purses, Tucker said.
When deputies, Kristy and Trent Boyd arrived on scene, they noticed a white pickup truck matching the vehicle description provided by the victim heading toward Rock Ranch Road, Tucker said.
He said the deputies pursued the vehicle, which had fled at a high rate of speed on Rock Ranch Road heading toward Mississippi Highway 43. When the suspects attempted to take a turn too fast, they wrecked the vehicle, Tucker said.
Duncan was arrested at the car, while her son fled on foot into the woods. Deputies were able to catch the 17-year-old male and arrest him, Tucker said.
All the items reported stolen by the victim were recovered in the vehicle. After the items were documented, they were returned to the victim, Tucker said.
Duncan was arrested and charged with one count of residential burglary, Tucker said.
The 17-year-old male was charged with residential burglary, Tucker said.
Duncan is currently being held at the Pearl River County Detention Facility.
