Local teams see early season success

Pearl River Central freshman pitcher Taylor Harris got her Blue Devil career off to an outstanding start Saturday, as she tossed a nohitter as PRC shut out visiting Lumberton 15-0.  Austin Pruitt smashed a two-run home run in the win.

The Lady Devils got the season started on Friday, beating visiting Gautier 6-0.  Hailey Buras picked up the win, striking out eight in four innings and allowing eight hits as well. Harris earned a save, throwing the final three frames.

Pearl River Central was slated to travel to Gulfport Monday afternoon.

Picayune opened the season Saturday in Gulfport at the Mississippi Coast Classic.  The Lady Tide beat D’Iberville 3-2 and ended up with a 6-6 tie against Wayne County.  In the win over the Lady Warriors, Nala Carter had a walk off RBI-single that scored Madyson Turnage to end the game.  The Lady Tide had six hits from six different players, led by Alyssa Pinero’s triple and Jennifer Walker’s double. Walker and Marissa McDonald also drove in runs in the winning effort.

Megan Dudenhefer pitched a complete game striking out seven to pick up the win.  Against Wayne County, Jennifer Walker drove in two runs, while Pinero, Lauren Walker and Rylee Dawsey each drove in a run apiece.  Elizabeth Taggard went most of the way on the mound. The game was called after five innings due to a time limit.

Picayune was scheduled to host county rival Poplarville Monday night. The two teams will meet again Thursday night in Poplarville.  The Lady Hornets opened the season on Saturday as well, sweeping a doubleheader from homestanding Stone County.  Poplarville won game one 7-2, as Camryn Pierce picked up the pitching win and Branda Northrop earned a save.

The Lady Hornets won game two 10-2, as Northrop picked up the win. Madison Nodurft carried the big stick on the day for Poplarville, as she had six hits in six trips to the plate while Northrop also had five hits in the two games.
