Local teams set to throw out first pitch

INKS DEAL: Picayune Memorial High School Softball standout Jennifer Walker has signed a with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.   Jennifer is a senior infielder for Coach Kristi Mitchell’s Lady Tide.   “Jennifer is a very talented softball player and has a tremendous work ethic.  MGCCC is not only getting an outstanding softball player but a great person.  I expect Jennifer to make an immediate impact next season” said Coach Kristi Mitchell.   MGCCC Coach Kenny Long said, “ We were able to watch Jennifer play at the end of her junior season and through summer ball.  We made her a top priority because she is a versatile player that can help us remain a championship program”. Prep fast-pitch softball season is set to begin across the state of Mississippi over the weekend, and several local teams will be throwing out the first pitch as well. Poplarville is traveling to Stone County to open the season on Saturday, while Pearl River Central is hosting Lumberton on Saturday to kick off the season as well.

The Picayune Lady Tide is one of a group of teams from across South Mississippi invited to participate in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Softball Classic, which will take place over a three day span at the Gulfport SportsPlex.

Mississippi State, South Alabama and Louisiana-Lafayette highlight the college lineup, which features 25 games on three fields over a three-day period. Also in action will be Memphis, Baylor, Texas State, Chattanooga, Ohio, Nicholls State and Texas-San Antonio.

The high school portion of the event includes 30 games on four fields split between Friday and Saturday. Among those local teams in action are East Central, Pascagoula, St. Martin, George County, Ocean Springs, Vancleave, St. Patrick, Harrison Central, Gulfport and Biloxi.

Tickets for the Gulf Coast Softball Classic are $10 per day or $20 for a weekend pass. The Gulfport SportsPlex is located just north of I-10 at Exit 31 (Canal Road).
