Lady Wildcats split doubleheader with visiting EM

POPLARVILLE — The Pearl River Community College softball team enters today’s doubleheader on the road at LSU-Eunice with a .500 record on the young campaign.

The Lady Wildcats split a doubleheader with East Mississippi Friday, winning the first game 5-4 before falling 9-1 in the nightcap.

Both squads are now even on the year with the Lady Wildcats at 2-2 and the Lady Lions at 3-3.

In the first game, EMCC went up 1-0 in the top of the first before PRCC rebounded in the bottom of the second to take the lead off a two-run homer by Kelsea Lewis of Oak Grove High.

The River padded its lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, while both teams scored solo runs in the sixth to make it 5-2 Lady Wildcats. The Lady Lions added the game’s final run in the top of the seventh.

Starter Courtney Warr of Theodore (Ala.) High (1-0) picked up the win in her two innings on the mound, giving up two hits and walking one, while Rachel Hickman of Poplarville High relieved in the third. She gave up six hits, struck out five and hit four batters.

East Miss starter Logan Smith (0-1) got the loss in her three innings of action.

Anna McCrary paced the Lady Lions’ eight-hit effort with three singles.

Besides Lewis’ two run homer, the sophomore catcher also singled, while Kaci Lantrip of Terry High doubled and singled (two RBIs), and Hickman doubled.

In the nightcap, East Mississippi limited the Lady Wildcats to a mere three hits, while blasting 14 of its own.

After a scoreless first, both teams scored solo runs in the second, while the Lady Lions took the lead for good with two in the top of the third before adding five in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Starter Hali Green (2-1) got the three-hit win in going the distance, striking out seven, walking two. PRCC starter Ashley Hawkins of Theodore (Ala.) High (0-1) got the loss in her six innings on the mound. She gave up 12 hits, struck out four, walked two, and hit two batters before Shelby Perry of Sumrall High relieved in the seventh. Perry gave up two hits and struck out a batter.

Jade Albritton paced the Lady Lions’ 14-hit attack with a home run, a double, and a single, while Meri Morgan Fortune tripled and had two singles.

Hawkins had a double for the Lady Wildcats.

PRCC returns to action today when the Lady Wildcats travel to LSU-Eunice in Eunice, La., for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. PRCC then hits the road for Alabama Southern in Monroeville, Ala., on Thursday for another 1 p.m. twin bill.
