FunCaptureeralServices for William B. “Billy” Smith, Jr. age 72 of Picayune, Miss., who passed away Saturday, November 30, 2013, were held Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Billy was laid to rest in the McNeill Cemetery under the direction of McDonald Funeral Home.

Bishop Jimmy Clark officiated the service.

Billy was an Electrician and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. His hobbies included reading, genealogy research, cooking, and spoiling his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Barney (Bill) Smith Sr. and Mary Allyne Foxell Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn “Gay” Whitfield Smith; his six daughters, Rhonda Paxton and husband Mike, Tanya Tomei and husband Jon, Allison Goodman and husband David, Kimberly Caswell and husband Royce, Crystal Kennedy and husband Ben, and Tina Brito and husband David; 23 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and his sister, JoAnn Messa and husband Leo.

In lieu of flowers, the family had requested contributions be made to McDonald Funeral Home.

Barbara Mizell began working for the Picayune Item in 1993. She started during the "cut and paste" days of the newspaper, and was the first to create a newspaper page using the computer for the Item. She has served as Composing Supervisor and honorary Religion Editor. Of all the contributions she has made over her 20 years at the Item, she is most proud of the World War II book "The Greatest Generation." Barbara was born and raised in the White Sand Community on Lee Hill, she has also written many short stories about growing up on the hill.
