Mississippi All-Stars can’t end losing streak

The Picayune boys came up with a big win Saturday in the annual War on the Shore here at Brother Peter Gymnasium on the campus of St. Stanislaus College.

The Maroon Tide smacked perennial Class 6A state power Harrison Central 69-52. Shemar Williams poured in game high 30 points to pace Picayune, while Montrel Cage chipped in 16 points to the winning cause. Donovan Rice added nine points and Hakeem Magee eight points for head coach Scott Stephens’ squad. Williams also grabbed eight rebounds and Rice dished out seven assists.

Picayune stands 5-6 on the season, and will host Pass Christian tonight at Kelly Wise Gym. The Lady Tide faces the Lady Pirates prior to that contest.

The win over the Red Rebels was the second in Brother Peter Gym for the Maroon Tide over the past week, as Picayune squeezed out a 51-47 over SSC last week. Williams had 19 points in the win, while Rice added 18 points and Magee chipped in 16 points to the winning effort. Williams recorded a double-double, also adding 11 rebounds.

Williams also had another double-double last week, with 30 points and 10 rebounds in a loss to West Jones. Rice added 20 points in the loss to the Mustangs.

Pearl River Central’s girls fell to Hancock Friday night 56-11. The Lady Hawks moved to 10-0 with the win to remain unbeaten on the season.

Both PRC squads hosted county rival Poplarville Monday night. A full report on those games will appear in Wednesday’s issue of the Picayune Item.

The Poplarville boys continued their winning ways of late with a 56-43 win over East Marion Friday night. Zack Taylor had 11 points for the Hornets, while Emetric Fells added 10 points and nine rebounds to the winning cause.

The Hornets were an impressive 8-2 entering Monday night’s game against the Blue Devils. The Lady Hornets fell to EMHS 41-30.

Both Poplarville teams complete a three game road swing tonight, traveling to Purvis for a pair of varsity games.
