Arboretum Paths: Why and how to ‘go native’

As a child, did you know the names of the trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants you played among? Perhaps you knew some of their stories, such as how yaupon holly was made into a tea by early settlers because of the caffeine contained in the leaves. Another story came from one of our exhibitors, who remembered how local health officials taught him as a child to fashion a toothbrush from a small branch cut from a sweetgum tree.
