Severe weather causes some power outages

Heavy rain storms moving south to southeast starting around 2 p.m. in Picayune caused power outages throughout Pearl River County.

Meteorologist Christopher Bannan of the National Weather Service office in Slidell, La., said radar indicated approximately 1.25 inches of rain fell around Picayune between 2 and 3:30 p.m.

 Lightning caused power outages in the area north of Mississippi Highway 43/Sycamore Road around 3 p.m., said April Lollar of Coast Electric. Lollar said by telephone at about 4:30 p.m. that Coast Electric crews were in the field locating and repairing the damage to get the electricity turned back on to the cooperative’s customers.

Mississippi Power Company spokesman Keith Guillot said only a handful of customers were without power in Pearl River County during the storm and power was able to be quickly restored.

Bannan also reported about 2 inches of rain fell near the North Pearl River County and Marion County line at around 12:50 p.m..

By 4:30 p.m., 2.1 inches of rain was measured in the rain gauge at the Picayune Item.
