The Picayune girls captured their first win of the season on the hardwood Tuesday night.

The Lady Tide knocked off homestanding East Marion 49-41 to move to 1-11 on the year.

Freshman Maya Whitehead tallied a game high 19 points for the winners, while Jada Simmons and Tearrah Harris each chipped in 11 points apiece for Picayune.

“We should have beat that team the first time we played them, but we had some girls out with injuries,” Picayune head coach Dennis Peterson said. “We are young and we haven’t won as many as we’d liked too so far, but the girls are working hard and getting better.”

The Maroon Tide made it a clean sweep on the evening, with an 88-53 win.

Shemar Williams poured in a game high 28 points to pace Picayune, while Sullivan Bell  added 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ahmad Acker and Eric Peyton each chipped in 10 points apiece to the winning cause as well.

The Picayune boys move to 12-3 with the win.

Also on Tuesday, homestanding Poplarville swept a pair of varsity games from Purvis.

Both Poplarville teams were coming off losses to Pearl River Central on Monday, but rebounded nicely as the Hornets won 63-49 and the Lady Hornets earned a 44-25 victory.

For the Poplarville girls, who are now 3-6, sophomore standout Shaneshia Hudderson led the way with 12 points while Sheena Travis added 10 points and Victoria Arbo eight points to the winning effort.

For the Hornets, Alex Wood tallied a game high 19 points in the win while Anthony Martin chipped in 15 points and Nigel Wood added 10 points to the winning cause.

The Hornets will play in the Hartfield Academy Tournament just outside of Jackson next week.

Also on Tuesday, Bretta Hart, a former Poplarville player, had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds as Bay High rolled past visiting West Harrison 66-34.

Hart also had nine blocked shots and five steals. Christa Reed added 20 points and eight rebounds for the 16-0 Lady Tigers, who host their own annual holiday tournament next week.

The Pearl River Central girls will play in that event, and take on Oak Grove at 1 p.m., on Thursday in the first day of the three day affair.

Also on Tuesday, the Hancock girls beat visiting Biloxi 46-41 as Tiffany Eakins and Alissa Adam each scored 12 points as the Lady Hawks moved to 12-2.

Biloxi won the boys game 66-58.
