Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department personnel are trying to identify a suspect who shot another man in the leg in the White Sand Community.

Chief Investigator Donnie Saucier said deputies were called out in reference to gun shots in the area of the White Sand Community Center where a party was taking place.

When deputies arrived at the community center, they saw the large party in progress and made contact with 29-year-old Jonathan Peters of Poplarville who had been shot in the upper left leg, the chief investigator said. Saucier said Peters told emergency personnel that he was shot by an assailant he didn’t identify, and he declined to give any more details about the incident. Peters was transported to Highland Community Hospital for treatment of his wound, which Saucier said is not believed to be life threatening.

Interviews by investigators with people at the scene provided little additional insight into what happened since no one wanted to provide any information concerning the incident, Saucier said. The investigation is continuing and includes some recently obtained information from an anonymous informant that may lead to identification of a suspect, the chief investigator said.

Saucier said anyone with information about this incident should call either Crime Stoppers anonymously at 601-799-CLUE(2583) or Detective Mark Ogden at 601-403-2542.
